Goats
The goat is a member of what is known as the Bovidae family. Most people do not realize how closely they are related to sheep because they both look so different. There are more then 300 breeds of goats all around the world.
Domestic goats are one of the oldest domesticated species that we have seen. Goats have been used for hundreds of years for their hair, skins, meat, and milk. However, in the last century they have become even more popular as pets.
Female goats are called nannies or does and males are called billies and bucks unless they are castrated and then they are called wethers. Their babies are called kids.
Majority of goats are born with two horns with various shapes and sizes that depends on the breed. Horns are usually found on the males - but in some breeds the women grow them as well. Their horns are made of their bone that is surrounded by proteins such as keratin - which they use to defend themselves.
Goats are ruminants - which means they have a four-chambered stomach that is made up of the rumen, omasum, reticulum, and the abomasum. Their pupils are horizontal and slit-shaped and help to give them peripheral depth perception. Male and female goats have beards and several types of goats have wattles. One will dangle from each side of their neck.
